The Quilting Ladies

Tucked in a sunny corner of the basement of Living Waters Church is a designated room, “the quilting room”. Here jammed in closets, boxes and tubs are fabrics, and batting and blankets the “quilting ladies” work with to produce around 80 double size quilts a year to go to Lutheran World Relief. These quilts will be transported to many places in the world where the need for simple covering and warmth are hard to come by. But also, the ladies will make diapers, sweaters, alter baby clothing and sew book bags to aid the care and education of young people in countries where resources are very limited or nonexistent. The ladies also make quilts and baby blankets which are distributed locally to the veteran homeless shelter, the VA clinic, the Pregnancy center, and St. Jude Children’s hospital. Taking the scraps left from their many project they make dog and cat pads which are donated to the local animal shelter. Although many think of “quilting” as a very tedious skill, these ladies will laugh at this thought. The only skills necessary to assist them is being able to cut, tie knots of yarn and if you have the ability to sew squares together they will appreciate your skill. When one joins the ladies on the second Tuesday morning of each month and often on the fourth as well at 9 am, one will find among the fabric and blankets a shared comradely between the ladies with much discussion, laughter, and shared love. We do have mandatory rest periods for the weary, and always a meal shared at noon. Anyone with the desire to have a fun and productive morning of fellowship would find this group welcoming and leave with a smile, (possibly with a project too.)
